Step two:

Using your text tool, type "r" using Webdings, 100pt, sharp and #FFFFFF.
Go to Select > Load Selection > Default settings. By doing this your X should have a marquee selection.
In your layer pallette, select your layer from step one and cut out the X marquee selection.
