Color overlays - Photoshop tutorial

Step 1
For this tutorial i am going to start off with the black and white image below. Load this image or another one of your choice into Photoshop.

Step 2
Now that you have your image open in Photoshop, selct the magnetic lasso tool from the tools menu:

Then click on the edge of the flower and carefully move your mouse around the edges. Your selection should snap to the edges:

Step 3
When you have your flower selected, make a new layer by going to Layer > New > Layer (or Ctrl+Shift+N), enter a name for your new layer and press enter. Now you can select a color from your swatches palette and fill your selection (Edit > Fill or Alt+Del), Your picture should now look like this:

Then, in the layer palette change the blending mode to "Color":

Remove your selection (press Ctrl+D) and your picture should now look like this:

Note: You do not necessarly have to use the magnetic lasso but when it comes to getting close to the edges of a particular area, it helps a lot. You can also use the rectangular or elliptical marquee as well as the airbrush to color areas that you wish to overlay.
