This is for a footwear application for designing shoe uppers, and the flattening has to occur without splits, although obviously there will stresses and distortions.

The rails are polysurfaces 22 segments - one for each surface - so the picking isn`t very easy. Using AutoChain will speed picking to around 6 picks per profile. Most of the transitions between the edges that make the shape profile aren`t tangent so using the automatic chaining doesn`t help a lot with the default settings. If you set Angle Tolerance (in Doc Props) up to 10 or so, the almost tangent connections work so you can do about half and half automatic chaining and manual picking.
