Today, most maps and GIS data sets use spatial information obtained - for a fee or for free - ¯from any number of sources, including government, professional organizations, and private companies. Unfortunately, no standardized format for today`s spatial data has been agreed upon, so that data exists in a wide variety of formats and configurations.
