In April of last year, I published an article entitled Tips for Custom Symbols in Autodesk Design Review with information on markup from Solutions Engineer for Autodesk Collaboration Solutions, Jason Pratt. One of the tips in the article involved being able to compare two versions of the same DWF using a trick.

The feature that really won me over to the whole DWF thing is the ability to plot to scale, a feature that's built into Autodesk's Express Viewer. The Viewer is included on your AutoCAD 2005 installation CD and can be downloaded from their website at www.autodesk.com/dwfviewer. This is where you want to send your contractors and collaborators who don't have AutoCAD so they can download it and view the DWF files.

AutoCAD, Revit, and Inventor allow a user to publish a DWF file. An Autodesk Design Review user can mark up that DWF file and return it. The AutoCAD, Revit, or Inventor user can then view those markups in the original design application and make changes to the original design data. This process is referred to as round tripping since the design data starts with the author, goes to a reviewer, and makes its way back to the author. It is a complete cycle.
